Search for Calgary’s largest employers and you’ll find lists with no sources and numbers from years ago. This page uses one published source, the FP500 2025 list of Calgary companies from Calgary Economic Development, and says exactly what its employee figures measure. It also covers the big public employers that company rankings leave out, and how to apply to large organizations.

Which Calgary companies employ the most people?

Calgary Economic Development publishes a filtered version of Financial Post Magazine’s annual FP500 ranking that shows only Calgary-based companies. The 2025 list has 105 Calgary companies from the FP500 and the next 300 largest. It ranks them by revenue but also gives each company’s number of employees, where reported. Sorted by employees, these are the 15 largest:

  • Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. (transport): 19,797
  • Suncor Energy Inc. (energy): 15,010
  • Enbridge Inc. (energy): 14,500
  • Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. (energy): 10,640
  • ATCO Ltd. (utility): 8,200
  • Cenovus Energy Inc. (energy): 7,150
  • TC Energy Corp. (energy): 6,668
  • Parkland Corp. (energy): 5,400
  • Precision Drilling Corp. (oilfield services): 5,159
  • Imperial Oil Ltd. (energy): 5,100
  • Enerflex Ltd. (oilfield services): 4,600
  • Calgary Co-operative Association Ltd. (food retail): 4,300
  • Ensign Energy Services Inc. (oilfield services): 4,157
  • FLINT Corp. (oilfield services): 3,275
  • Pembina Pipeline Corp. (energy): 2,997

Do these numbers mean jobs in Calgary?

Not exactly. The list shows companies headquartered in Calgary, and the employee figures are for the whole company. A railway, a pipeline company or a drilling contractor can have most of its workers in the field, at plants or in other provinces and countries. The figures tell you how big an employer is, not how many of its jobs are in the city.

Head offices are still a big part of Calgary’s job market. Citing the FP500 database, Calgary Economic Development says Calgary has the highest per capita concentration of head offices in Canada.

Company ownership also changes. Before you apply, check the employer’s own careers page so you know who is hiring and where the jobs are based.

Which industries are the big employers in?

Energy dominates. Of the 105 Calgary companies on the FP500 2025 list, 55 are classed as energy and 17 as oilfield services, so 72 are in or around oil and gas. Seven more are utilities, including ATCO, ENMAX, AltaGas and TransAlta.

There are large employers outside energy too. Canadian Pacific Kansas City, the largest by workforce, is a railway. Calgary Co-operative Association, a food retailer, has 4,300 employees. Graham Income Trust (engineering, 2,400 employees), SNDL (retail, 2,604) and High Tide (retail, 1,750) also appear, as do real estate companies such as Boardwalk REIT (1,573).

  • Energy: 55 companies
  • Oilfield services: 17 companies
  • Utilities: 7 companies
  • All other industries combined: 26 companies

Which companies round out the top 25?

Below the top 15, the FP500 2025 Calgary list has another ten companies with more than 1,800 employees each. Again, these are company-wide figures. The mix is wider here: utilities, a chemical maker, a retailer and engineering firms sit alongside oilfield services companies.

  • AltaGas Ltd. (utility): 2,723
  • SNDL Inc. (retail): 2,604
  • NOVA Chemicals Corp. (chemicals): 2,600
  • CES Energy Solutions Corp. (oilfield services): 2,532
  • Badger Infrastructure Solutions Ltd. (engineering): 2,517
  • Graham Income Trust (engineering): 2,400
  • ENMAX Corp. (utility): 2,300
  • Calfrac Well Services Ltd. (oilfield services): 2,200
  • Total Energy Services Inc. (oilfield services): 2,051
  • Secure Waste Infrastructure Corp. (oilfield services): 1,817

What about public-sector employers?

The FP500 ranks companies, so it leaves out governments, health services, school boards and universities. We have not found a current, sourced head count for them in Calgary, so we don’t rank them here. You can apply to them directly.

The City of Calgary posts openings on its careers site, with sections for entry-level, seasonal and temporary jobs, and information for international applicants. Alberta Health Services and the Calgary Board of Education also run their own careers pages.

How do you get hired by a large employer?

Large employers usually ask you to apply through their own careers site, and many screen applications with software first. alis says many companies use applicant tracking systems (ATS) that scan resumes for keywords and reject resumes that don’t include them, or that the software can’t read.

That means a tailored, plainly formatted resume matters more at a big company, not less. Use standard headings, no columns or graphics, and the same words the posting uses for skills you really have. Search Job Bank as well as employers’ own sites.

For trades in particular, alis notes that work in construction may not come with a permanent placement and some of it is seasonal, so ask how long a role is expected to last.

Do big employers hire trades workers and drivers?

Yes, though often indirectly. alis says electricians are employed by construction and maintenance contractors, manufacturers, resource companies and other large organizations. It says truck drivers work for transportation companies, manufacturing and distribution companies, retail outlets and moving companies, either as employees or as self-employed contractors.

On 13 October 2026, Job Bank listed 7 electrician postings and 144 transport truck driver postings in the Calgary Region. Our wage pages for electricians and truck drivers give the Job Bank and Alberta survey wage figures, and explain the certification or licence each job needs.

How should you research a big employer before applying?

A few minutes of research makes a tailored application much easier, and it shows in an interview. Start with the employer’s own careers page: it tells you what roles are open, where they are based and how to apply. Check whether a posting is in Calgary, at a field site, or somewhere else entirely, since many of these companies operate across Canada and beyond.

Then read how the company describes its own work, and pick out the words it uses for the skills it wants. Those are the keywords to use in your resume, where they honestly describe you. Set up job alerts on the careers page and on Job Bank, so you see new postings early.

  • Read the careers page and note where the jobs are based.
  • Match the skills words in the posting to your real experience.
  • Set up job alerts with the employer and on Job Bank.
  • Check whether a role is permanent, seasonal or for one project.
