What do the wage figures mean?
Job Bank publishes a low, median and high hourly wage for each occupation group. The median is the middle point: half of the workers earn more and half earn less. For electricians (NOC 72200, “Electricians (except industrial and power system)”), the Calgary Region median is $40.00/hour, above the Alberta median of $38.00/hour. The range runs from $24.00/hour at the low end to $46.00/hour at the high end. Job Bank’s source is Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey, reference period 2023-2024.
The 2023 Alberta Wage and Salary Survey, published on alis, measures the same NOC group across the whole province. It reports an overall median of $39.42/hour and an average of $38.41/hour, with an average salary of $81,919 a year at 41.2 hours a week. It also splits pay by experience: the median starting wage was $38.00/hour and the median top wage was $44.00/hour. These survey figures don’t include overtime, benefits or bonuses.
How much do electrician apprentices earn?
Alberta sets a floor for apprentice pay. Tradesecrets, the provincial apprenticeship site, says an apprentice must be paid at least a set percentage of the rate earned by the lowest-paid electrician journeyperson at the same company. Employers can pay more than the minimum.
For example, if the lowest-paid journeyperson at a company earns $40.00/hour, a first-period apprentice there must earn at least $20.00/hour, and a fourth-period apprentice at least $32.00/hour. Your actual rate depends on your employer.
- Period 1: at least 50% of the journeyperson rate
- Period 2: at least 60%
- Period 3: at least 70%
- Period 4: at least 80%
